100 in 1 Day Toronto is happening tomorrow and is part of a growing global movement that is changing how people interact with their cities.
Originating in Bogotá, Colombia in 2012, it has encouraged hundreds of one-day community-based interventions in cities around the world with things like street art, urban gardens, beautification projects, social events, and improvements in city infrastructure all being profiled in a city-wide festival on June 7, 2014.
There are so many different exciting interventions happening in the city tomorrow, so we wanted to highlight some of the ones focused on food issues and urban gardening. Be sure to check out the whole list to see what might spark your interest.
Growing Power and the Good Food Revolution
The Malvern Action for Neighbourhood Change is partnering with Malvern Public Library to screen the food documentary titled: Growing Power and the Good Food Revolution: A Call to Farm.
Kitchen Garden essentials

Poster Pocket Planters
An ongoing collaborative project, Poster Pocket Planters was started by Eric Cheung and Sean Martindale in Toronto in late Spring, 2009. They create temporary planters by cutting and folding existing layers of illegally pasted poster advertisements found in urban environments.
Flowers for diseases
Flowers for diseases is a project aimed at increasing the awareness about various diseases (grouped in 18 major categories) as well as preventive measures.
Potluck in the Park
Friends of Wildwood Park is inviting you to celebrate our little community by bringing all park users together for a picnic. Share some good food, fresh air and conversation with your neighbours.
Wastefree TakeOut Initiative
Handing out reusable takeout container “eco-container” program resource packages to as many takeout restaurants in Toronto as possible! Educating public about dangers of Styrofoam and other disposable containers!
Moss Graffiti Demo and Brainstorm
We will be hosting an outdoor demonstration of some large-scale moss-art projects we are working on (if the weather isn’t nice we will be inside CSI).
Community Tree Planting
Volunteer, dig in and join Evergreen and your community to plant native trees and shrubs at Mount Charles Park in Mississauga. Together with 407 ETR employees and clients we will enhance the integrity of this park by increasing local biodiversity and providing habitat for local wildlife.
Native Gardens for Butterflies, Bees, Birds and People! Enhancing LEAF’s Urban Forest Demonstration Gardens
On the morning of June 7th, LEAF staff, volunteers and 100 in 1 Day participants will work together to plant common milkweed and other beneficial native species in our Urban Forest Demonstration Garden at the Spadina TTC Station.
Cooking with Soul
Cooking with Soul is about teaching new skills, learning new things about the food we eat, enjoying a tasty meal and sharing it with others. We’ll make a nutritious, cost effective lunch that will use local food.
Grow Your Medicine
Through different Art forms, the Youth Interns at the Black Creek Community Farm will showcase our sustainable food security initiative within the Jane and Finch Community.Participants will get the chance the meet the farmers,and learn how to grow their own medicine.
Working Bee
This event is hosted by Greening Ward 32 and its Friends of Woodbine Park in partnership with Transition Toronto. We are doing a “Working Bee” style spring cleanup of two large plant beds on the berm by Queen St. E. & Kingston Rd., south-east corner, which City Parks installed for us and that we’ve been taking care of for the past two years.
DIY Backyard Bee Hotels
As part of Pollinator Month in June, Sustainable.TO Architecture + Building is working to support bee health by creating pollinator-friendly habitats (the “bee hotels”!) all across the Greater Toronto Area.
Pitch in! Planting a Kids’ Community Garden
This spring, Windup Bird Cafe is bringing a kids community garden to the corner of Borden and College! This garden will be teaching garden for kids’ food activism and will support the restaurant’s local produce. On June 7th, community members and neighbours are invited to help out on our first planting day to build a vertical wall garden.
People’s Picnic
This picnic will include workshops and presentations from Occupy Gardens, the Toronto Seed Library, and several other local organizations and movements building towards a better future. It will also feature the musical stylings of Tyler Shipley (of The Consumer Goods) and other artists.
Toronto Veggie Parade
All are welcome to join this family-friendly event! Musicians, dancers, roller derby teams, party-goers and fun-seekers of all kinds. The 5th Annual Toronto Veggie Parade is for everyone and anyone interested in sharing a positive, friendly message about being veg.

Jane’s Walk: Imagine a Garden in Every School
Sunday Harrison and Todd Irvine of Green Thumbs Growing Kids will lead you on a walk through three learning gardens, where children from two of Canada’s densest neighbourhoods dig in the dirt, discover nature, and develop their knowledge of nutrition and growing food.
